Did You Get Paid Without Realising?

Sometimes, particularly in small business, it can seem you are doing a great deal for not much return, that is, of the hard cash kind. It can be easy to get fed up, resentful and lose enthusiasm, which in turn puts potential customers and clients off, starting that downward spiral.  Once you realise there are actually 4 currencies you can be paid in, it’s easier to shift your mood and perspective, opening up even more potential for growth.

Here are the 4 Currencies of Life

1. Give – this is when you give from love, from a generous heart space, without expectation of return. Your reward is feeling great about yourself, and knowing you’ve helped others feel good too.
2. Get – hard cash or payment in kind fits in here.  Yes, it’s essential, but focussing purely on this option limits your opportunities for growth and connection.
3. Gain – this currency is about gaining knowledge and experience. For example you might give a talk, and although you might not get direct business from it, you gain experience, and seed future business.
4. Grow – your bank balance is covered under “Get”, this is about growing your database, your networks, your relationships.

So next time you catch yourself saying, “Well, that was a waste of time!”, take a moment to check in if you were actually paid in other ways.  And yes, the ultimate experience is one in which you are paid all 4 ways, so keep your radar on for as many of those opportunities as possible.
